Work-Ordered Day
Work opportunities are grouped into units that are essential to the daily and ongoing operation of the club. Before choosing a work unit, members have the opportunity to match their skills, capabilities, and interests with the various unit functions.
The work units are:
Evergreen Café: Members and staff perform all the duties required in most food-service operations. Members plan, shop, cook and serve lunch daily to members, staff and guests. The Café works with the club’s Garden Committee to manage the greenhouse, raised vegetable beds, and flower gardens on the property.
Business: Members perform a variety of administrative services such as answering telephones, taking messages, using computers, and writing and organizing the clubhouse newsletter. Members working in this unit maintain membership records, attendance and employment statistics, monitor financial transactions, and prepare a variety of reports.
Boutique: Members and staff operate this on-site resale store that offers low-cost. Gently-used clothing, home goods, and miscellaneous items. Store tasks include retail sales using a cash register, collecting donations, and all other store operations.
Employment
The Evergreen Club believes employment plays a central role in life and helps form an individual’s sense of identity and self-worth. In addition to building financial independence, work gives us purpose and connects us to others. Work builds community and gives meaning and a sense of dignity to our lives.
By partnering with local businesses, the Transitional Employment Placement program makes it possible for members to have part-time paid jobs in the community. These placements provide skills and build confidence as members re-enter the workforce. The clubhouse provides onsite job training, supervision, and ongoing follow-up for both the employee and the employer. The club also offers support to members who obtain permanent employment and to members returning to school.
